Tim Southee took five for 94 as New Zealand bowled Bangladesh out for 289 on the first day of the second Test in Christchurch.

Southee's sixth five-wicket haul in Tests put Bangladesh on the back foot as they look to secure a series draw, having lost by seven wickets in the first Test at Wellington.

Soumya Sarkar top-scored with 86 - his highest Test effort - but his dismissal saw the Tigers waste a promising start, having been 165 for two at one stage.

Southee had Tamim Iqbal caught behind for five in the fourth over of the day, and opening partner Trent Boult snared Mahmudullah in similar fashion for 19 to leave the tourists 38 for two.

Sarkar and Shakib Al Hasan shared a stand of 127 in just 25 overs with both players making half-centuries.

However, Boult returned to have Sarkar caught by Colin de Grandhomme at short cover after he failed to control a push at one that stuck slightly in the pitch.

Sabbir Rahman gloved a short Boult delivery to Southee at slip for seven and Shakib fell in the next over for 59 as wicketkeeper BJ Watling pouched a nick down the leg side.

Three wickets had fallen for 14 runs at that stage and Nazmul Hossain Shanto and Nurul Hasan steadied the ship with a 53-run stand.

Shanto guided Southee to Jeet Raval at backward point for 18 and Neil Wagner got in on the act by bowling Mehedi Hasan Miraz for 10.

Southee bounced out Taskin Ahmed for eight and Nurul nicked Boult behind three short of his fifty.

Fittingly it was Southee who wrapped things up by trapping Kamrul Islam Rabbi lbw for two, with the Black Caps' batsmen now charged with trying to establish a first-innings lead over the coming days.
