New Zealand levelled their one-day international series against India with a 19-run win under the lights at JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi.

The Black Caps set up a series decider in Visakhapatnam on Saturday after bowling out India for 241.

Tim Southee claimed three for 40, including the back-to-back wickets of Manish Pandey and Kedar Jadhav, which undermined India's pursuit of 260 for seven.

Martin Guptill top-scored with 72 for the tourists after Kane Williamson opted to bat first at the home ground of India skipper MS Dhoni.

It looked a positive decision after o peners Guptill and Tom Latham brought up 80 in the 10-over powerplay.

Latham was out caught at short fine leg by Ajinkya Rahane off Axar Patel for 39, while Guptill crashed 12 boundaries in his 72 before he was second man to go caught behind by Dhoni off Hardik Pandya.

Williamson added 41 and Ross Taylor was run out on 35 as India slowed the charge, with regular wickets restricting New Zealand to a competitive total.

In reply, after losing Rohit Sharma in the fifth over for 11, Rahane and Virat Kohli - whose unbeaten century had steered India to a seven-wicket win in Mohali - moved the total swiftly along towards three figures.

However, Kohli was removed for 45 when he cut a thin edge off Ish Sodhi through to wicketkeeper BJ Watling, before Rahane was trapped lbw by Jimmy Neesham on 57.

Patel weighed in with 38 off 40 balls, but New Zealand took control when Southee removed Pandey and Jadhav from successive balls before also removing Pandya to a second good catch from Latham.

India were left in trouble at 167 for seven and while number 10 Dhawal Kulkarni gave brief hope of an unlikely home win, adding a rapid unbeaten 25, the hosts were bowled out in the 49th over.
