Steve Smith-led Australia to begin new era against Ireland

Australia will move on quickly from their Ashes heartache as new captain Steve Smith prepares to embrace a fresh era for his team in the one-day format.

The tourists have been given little time to dwell on their 3-2 defeat in the recently-completed Investec Series as their limited-overs part of the tour begins on Thursday against Ireland.

It is Australia's first 50-over fixture since beating New Zealand in the World Cup final in March, while Smith will be leading the team for the first time following the international retirement of Michael Clarke.

Smith confirmed there would be six changes to the XI that triumphed over the Black Caps in Melbourne, with Joe Burns set to make his ODI debut in Belfast at the top of the batting order.

Pacemen Nathan Coulter-Nile and Pat Cummins replace rested duo Mitchell Johnson and Josh Hazlewood although Mitchell Starc, the number one ranked bowler in the ICC ODI rankings, will play.

"I guess it's a new era in a way for Australian cricket," said Smith, who was the leading run-scorer in the Ashes.

"We've got some experienced players around and we've got some young guys around as well, I think we've got a good mix together.

"We've got to continue playing the aggressive brand of cricket that we've done so well and continue to improve.

"We've got to continue to raise the bar, we're number one in the world, but everyone's going to be after us so we're going to have to keep improving to stay in that spot."

Australia will be overwhelming favourites at Stormont, but Ireland captain William Porterfield is relishing the opportunity to pit his wits against the number one ranked ODI side.

"We've beaten Test nations on our home soil but it doesn't come any bigger than the world champions and if you could put that scalp on Ireland's CV then that would be great," said Porterfield.

"All the lads are excited and can't wait to get out there."

Ireland, who won three of their World Cup matches but exited in the pool stages, will be without the injured Kevin O'Brien while fellow all-rounder Alex Cusack announced his international retirement last week.
