Sri Lanka bowler Rangana Herath, 38, quits limited-overs international cricket

Sri Lanka veteran Rangana Herath has announced his limited-overs international retirement in the hope of prolonging his Test career.

The reliable slow left-armer took 74 wickets in 71 one-day internationals and 18 in 17 Twenty20s, including a format-best five for three against New Zealand en route to helping Sri Lanka lift the World Twenty20 title two years ago.

He played all four of his country's matches in the recently concluded tournament in India in what proved to be his swansong with the white ball.

The 38-year-old, who had not featured in an ODI in more than 12 months, told Sri Lanka Cricket's official website: "Every cricketer has to stop at the right time.

"I feel it's time to make room for fresh talent to be groomed with the 2019 World Cup in view."

Herath remains a consistent performer in Tests, particularly on the sub-continent, and is just three wickets away from becoming the third Sri Lankan - after Muttiah Muralitharan and Chaminda Vaas - to reach the 300 mark.

He may be given the chance to reach the landmark in Sri Lanka's three-Test tour of England in May and June.
