England hopeful Adil Rashid shook Sussex to keep LV= County Championship Division One leaders Yorkshire firmly in charge of their own title destiny.

Leg-spinner Rashid finished the second day at Hove with three for 67 as Sussex closed on 175 for four in reply to Yorkshire's 494.

Rashid removed dangerman Ed Joyce for 100 after the opener had cracked a century from 139 balls and also dismissed Luke Wells and Matt Machan.

Earlier, Gary Ballance's first hundred since the West Indies-England Antigua Test in April had put Yorkshire in command, the left-hander's 165 from 266 balls being the 26th first-class century of his career.

Ballance and Tim Bresnan (78) put on 197 in a seventh-wicket partnership which turned the tide Yorkshire's way.

Second-placed Middlesex fought back in a low-scoring game with Durham at Chester-le-Street to reach the halfway stage on top.

Middlesex took a 27-run first-innings lead after bowling out Durham for 169, the visitors' attack sharing out the wickets as only Gordon Muchall (64) offered real resistance with the bat.

Durham were right back in the game as Middlesex slipped to 29 for four - Chris Rushworth taking three wickets to equal Ottis Gibson's 2007 record of 80 first-class wickets in a season for the county.

But Dawid Malan made the most of being dropped first ball to hit an unbeaten 56 and guide Middlesex into a 145-run lead with six wickets in hand.

Nottinghamshire piled on the runs against Warwickshire at Trent Bridge with their highest total since 2007 and a special landmark for Chris Read.

Having begun the day on 404 for five, the home side advanced their first-innings score to 600 all out with Read (69), Jake Ball (49 not out), Samit Patel (46) and Brett Hutton (37) building on first-day centuries from Alex Hales and Steven Mullaney.

Read went past 50 for the eighth time this season and two more runs produced a standing ovation for his 15,000th first-class run.

Warwickshire were soon in turmoil at 10 for three but Laurie Evans (39 not out) helped the Bears recover to 100 for four, although still needing another 351 to avoid the follow-on.

James Hildreth (220 not out) and Peter Trego (130 not out) shone with the bat as Somerset scored a massive 565 for five against Worcestershire at Taunton.

The pair's sixth-wicket partnership was worth 221 when Somerset declared and then the home bowlers cashed in as Worcestershire wobbled to 44 for four before rain forced an early conclusion.

Lewis Gregory claimed two wickets as top-four batsmen Daryl Mitchell, Brett D'Oliviera, Tom Fell and Alex Gidman all departed.

Karl Brown's first century for over four years put Division Two leaders Lancashire in a dominant position against Glamorgan at Emirates Old Trafford.

Opener Brown's 132 from 292 balls and a 104-ball 95 from Alex Davies saw Lancashire make 462 and there were also sizeable contributions from Steven Croft (67) and James Faulkner (63) before Glamorgan ended the day on 40 for one.

Surrey batsman Ben Foakes showed his liking for the Gloucestershire attack again with an unbeaten 140 putting the visitors on top in Bristol.

The 22-year-old Foakes has five first-class centuries in total and three of them have come against Gloucestershire, and his latest effort saw promotion-chasing Surrey end day two on 349 for six - a first innings lead of 116.

Teenager Sam Curran provided excellent support for Foakes in a third-wicket partnership of 113 and was one short of a maiden first-class century when he fell.

Mark Cosgrove's second consecutive century helped Leicestershire to a 47-run lead on first innings against Northamptonshire at Wantage Road.

Replying to Northamptonshire's 325, Leicestershire recovered from 34 for four to make 372 with Cosgrove's 110 off 194 balls including 14 fours and a six.

The Australian took a back-seat during his sixth-wicket partnership with Niall O'Brien whose breezy 95 came from 84 balls and also contained 14 fours and a six.

Rory Kleinveldt was the pick of the home bowlers with figures of five for 68 from his 25 overs - his third five-wicket haul of the season - while Muhammad Azharullah claimed the 300th wicket of his first-class career.

Derbyshire's bowlers bundled out Kent for 159 to seize the advantage at the County Ground - with Mark Footitt reaching 60 wickets for the season.

Footitt took four for 61 from his 19.5 overs and was supported by Tony Palladino (two for 21) and Ben Cotton (two for 45).

Derbyshire reached 73 for one at the close to extend their lead to 167.
