Suresh Raina's dynamic century took India to 304 for six against England in the second one-day international at Cardiff on Wednesday.
In what was effectively the first of this five-match series, following Monday's total washout in Bristol, India were in trouble at 19 for two before a stand of 91 between Rohit Sharma (52) and Ajinkya Rahane (41) revived the innings.
Left-hander Raina, who made exactly 100, and India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (52), then strengthened the tourists' grip on the game with a fifth-wicket stand of 144.
Rain during the mid-innings break left England chasing a revised target of 295 off 47 overs.
Chris Woakes led England's attack with four for 52 in his 10 overs, with off-spinner James Tredwell (two for 42) the only other wicket-taking bowler in the innings.
England didn't help themselves by bowling 16 wides with paceman Chris Jordan contributing 12 -- the equivalent of two extra overs -- in an expensive return of none for 73.
Middle-order batsman Raina was especially severe on England's attack during the batting powerplay.
World champions India scored 62 runs in five overs from the 36th to the 40th of their innings, with Raina contributing 41 off just 15 balls.
England captain Alastair Cook opted to field first after winning the toss and then saw Anderson and Woakes, opening the bowling in place of the injured Stuart Broad, start with a maiden apiece.
Shikhar Dhawan made a nervy 11 before he was caught behind off Woakes.
Three balls later, 19 for one became 19 for two as Virat Kohli's miserable tour of England continued with a duck.
Kohli struck a powerful drive off Woakes but the ball flew straight to Cook at mid-off.
His exit followed Kohli's meagre return of 134 runs at 13.4 during India's recent 3-1 defeat by England in the preceding five-Test series.
At that stage, there was a case for keeping Anderson and Woakes going.
But instead Cook made a double bowling change, Jordan replacing Woakes (5-1-8-2) and Ben Stokes coming on for Anderson (6-1-27-0).
India then cut loose, Sharma lofting Stokes for six off a free hit and Rahane driving Jordan for four.
But as so often in his England career, one-day specialist Tredwell proved a partnership breaker.

He had Rahane, pushing forward defensively, stumped by wicketkeeper Jos Buttler and then lured Sharma into a miscued lofted drive which found Woakes at long-off.
Raina, however, launched Woakes for two sixes in four balls -- the first straight back over the bowler's head and the second high over long leg.
In total, India scored 20 runs off the 38th over.
Dhoni added telling blows of his own before Raina, advancing down the pitch, brought up the duo's hundred stand in 71 balls with a straight six off Tredwell.
None of England's seamers came round the wicket to Raina or bowled a slower ball at him.
Raina then tucked away a Jordan full toss to complete a 74-ball century, including 12 fours and three sixes. His second fifty came in just 25 balls.
It was only the 27-year-old Raina's fourth hundred in 193 matches at this level, although he does usually bat in the middle-order.
He was dismissed for exactly 100 when he holed out off Anderson to Woakes, sweeping on the cover boundary.
Dhoni scored at better than a run-a-ball, before he was bowled by a slower delivery from Woakes.
