Rain ends Sri Lanka's hopes in ODI series against New Zealand

Rain ended Sri Lanka's hopes of winning their one-day series against New Zealand as the fourth ODI was abandoned in Nelson on Saturday.

Only nine overs of play were possible - during which the Black Caps did their best to put on a show with some explosive batting - but after the rains returned the match was abandoned to leave New Zealand 2-1 up with one left to play.

After a long delay, the teams emerged with the intention of playing 24 overs aside even with further rain forecast.

New Zealand offered some serious entertainment during their brief spell in the middle, with Martin Guptill hitting three sixes in a single over off Dushmantha Chameera as they raced to 37 without loss after three overs.

Sri Lanka hit back as they took three quick wickets. Tom Latham feathered a delivery from Thisara Perera behind to go for nine, and in the next over, Guptill was plumb lbw to Nuwan Kulasekara, having scored 27 off just 14 deliveries.

Two overs later, Kane Williamson went caught and bowled by Chameera for 12 to leave New Zealand on 53 for three after 6.3 overs, but the clouds were already closing in and the rain soon returned.

The series concludes in Mount Maunganui on Tuesday.
