Period of mourning could put venue of fifth Test in doubt

The schedule for next week's fifth and final Test of England's tour of India appears to be in doubt following the death of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa Jayaraman in Chennai.

Jayalalithaa died at the age of 68 on Monday evening, and a seven-day period of public mourning is anticipated.

England, preparing to battle back from 2-0 down in the fourth Test in Mumbai this week, are planning to travel on to Chennai for the fifth, which is due to begin on December 16 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

A statement for the Board of Control for Cricket in India, however, spelled out that following the death of the prominent politician a decision has yet to be taken about when or where the fifth Test will take place.

Should Chennai be unavailable, Pune and Kolkata are the most likely alternative venues.

The statement read: "BCCI would like to inform that no decision has been taken regarding hosting of the fifth match of the Paytm Test series against England in Chennai from December 16, 2016.

"BCCI is in constant touch with Tamil Nadu Cricket Association & local authorities and constantly monitoring the situation. BCCI fully understands the sensitivity of the matter and will keep everyone informed."
