Nottinghamshire all-rounder Paul Franks has announced his retirement from first-class cricket.

The 36-year-old has taken 524 first-class wickets at an average of 33 and scored 7,185 runs at 28 in a career stretching back to 1996, during which he has won two County Championship titles and made one England one-day appearance.

Franks took a hat-trick against Warwickshire in 1997, the first in a decade by a Notts player, and displayed his versatility by filling in as an opening batsman in the title-winning 2010 season.

Franks, who will continue to captain the club's second XI, said: "Playing for Nottinghamshire in first class cricket has meant an enormous amount to me. The shirt and the cap really matters.

"Now the work we're doing with the young players in the academy team and second XI is going from strength-to-strength and will continue to do so.

"I'm a good example of what can happen if you give everything you've got. You can be the one that has a long career and does a decent job along the way."
