Captain Mohammad Hafeez struck a fluent half-century to help Pakistan level the one-day international series with Australia after a six-wicket win in the second match in Melbourne.

Hafeez struck eight fours in his 104-ball knock of 72 before he was third out with the tourists on 142 chasing a target of 221.

Shoaib Malik then carried Pakistan over the line with an unbeaten 42, while James Faulkner was the pick of the bowlers with two for 35.

Earlier, Steve Smith was the only Australian batsman to make a solid contribution with 60 as the hosts struggled against the Pakistan spinners in being dismissed for 220 in 48.2 overs.

Imad Wasim, Shoaib Malik and Hafeez varied their pace superbly to frustrate Australia after paceman Junaid Khan had removed both openers with the score on 40 in his first ODI for more than 19 months.

Matthew Wade made a useful 35 down the order before being bowled by Malik but the target of 221 never seriously looked like troubling Pakistan.
