Mitchell Swepson and Ashton Agar included in Australia squad for India tour

Australia have called up uncapped leg-spinner Mitchell Swepson while slow left armer Ashton Agar has also been included in a 16-man squad for their next Test assignment in India.

Swepson and Agar, both 23, join Nathan Lyon and Steve O'Keefe as the frontline spin contingent for the four-Test series, which gets under way on February 23 in Pune, while recalled all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is a handy slow bowler.

The inclusion of Maxwell, who has not played a Test in more than two years, comes a month after he was fined for his criticism of Australia team-team Matthew Wade.

The two appeared to have put their differences behind them as they shared an 82-run stand in Australia's opening one-day victory over Pakistan on Friday, with Wade going on to make his maiden ODI ton.

Agar, meanwhile, has not featured in Australia's Test team since his surprise appearances against England in the 2013 Ashes, where he made a memorable knock of 98 from number 11 in the order on his international debut, aged 19.

His bowling has led to his recall, though, with i nterim national selector Trevor Hohns eager to give Australia many turning options on subcontinent pitches that are likely to be conducive to spin.

"We don't know what pitch conditions we will come up against in each of the venues but wanted to have flexibility and options available to us," he said.

"We know India is an incredibly tough place to tour and have success in, with most international teams struggling to adapt to the conditions, but we have chosen a squad which we believe will work really hard in its endeavours to perform well and give a good account of itself in the sub-continent.

"We expect all of the young players chosen to benefit immensely from the experience.

"Mitchell is an exciting young leg-spinner. We feel he has a lot of potential and want to see him take his opportunity in conditions that should suit him should he get a chance.

"Ashton is a good left-arm orthodox spinner who can be very exciting with the bat and also fields extremely well. He provides us with a great all-round package.

"We know Glenn plays very well against spin and has a lot of experience playing in India. We think his ability with the bat, coupled with his handy off-spin will complement the bowling unit if required."

Jackson Bird, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc are the only specialist pacemen although seam-bowling all-rounder Mitchell Marsh has also been selected and the options will be reassessed after the second Test in Bangalore.

The first Test starts a day after Australia's third and final Twenty20 against Sri Lanka at Adelaide, where none of the 16-man squad selected for India will be available, with opening batsman David Warner hitting out at the "very, very poor" scheduling.

Australia were whitewashed 4-0 on their last visit to India, a trip that saw four players disciplined for failing to complete a presentation on how the team could improve, an incident referred to now as 'homework-gate'.

Of that quartet, only Usman Khawaja will return, with Shane Watson and Mitchell Johnson both retired and James Pattinson not selected.

Australia squad: S Smith (captain), D Warner, A Agar, J Bird, P Handscomb, J Hazlewood, U Khawaja, N Lyon, M Marsh, S Marsh, G Maxwell, S O'Keefe, M Renshaw, M Starc, M Swepson, M Wade (wk).
