Marvan Atapattu quits as Sri Lanka head coach

Marvan Atapattu has resigned from his position as Sri Lanka head coach, the country's governing body has announced.

Atapattu had been elevated from his position of batting coach to interim head coach in April 2014 after Paul Farbrace left the post, and the Sri Lankan's appointment was made permanent in October.

He led Sri Lanka to a historic Test series win in England last year, a victory clinched in the thrilling match at Headingley which was won in the final over of the final day.

More recently, Sri Lanka lost a three-Test series to India, with Kumar Sangakkara retiring from international cricket after the second Test.

In a statement on Thursday, Sri Lanka Cricket said: "We would like to inform you of the resignation of Mr Marvan Atapattu from the post of head coach of the Sri Lanka Cricket Team which has been accepted by Sri Lanka Cricket.

"During this time, he has given of his time and service with the same professionalism that was his hallmark as an international cricketer.

"The high point of his career as coach must be the series victory against England in England in May/June 2014, when the Sri Lanka Cricket Team excelled in all departments of the game to gain that coveted triumph.

"Sri Lanka Cricket thanks Mr Atapattu for his efforts as head coach and batting coach of the Sri Lanka Cricket Team, and we wish him every success in all his future endeavours."

Atapattu was one of the stand-out players of his generation, winning the World Cup in 1996 under captain Arjuna Ranatunga and playing a total of 90 Tests and 268 one-day internationals.
