Former England opening batsman Marcus Trescothick will play his 25th first-class season in 2017 after signing a one-year contract extension at Somerset.

The 40-year-old, who played 76 Tests and 123 one-day internationals for his country, has scored more than 39,000 runs across all formats since making his Somerset debut in 1993.

Trescothick has shown no signs of age catching up with him this season, hitting 1,284 runs at an average of 45.85 in Specsavers County Championship Division One.

"I have made no secret of my desire to carry on playing for Somerset for as long as I can," he told the club's official website.

"I'm really enjoying my cricket at the moment and I still have the hunger to succeed. I am delighted that I will be a part of this club for another year.

"It's a really exciting time for the county at the moment with the talent that we have coming through and I can't wait to see what happens in the next 12 months."

Somerset director of cricket Matthew Maynard added: "Marcus still has so much to offer, both on and off the field.

"The runs he scores, the experience he brings and the knowledge that he passes on to the younger players make him a vital member of this squad.

"Over the last two seasons Marcus has demonstrated a tremendous desire to continue playing for the county and we are all delighted that he will be back out there breaking records for us again next year."
