Kohli clinches first Indian win

Virat Kohli clinched his first Test win as India captain after Sri Lanka crumbled to a 278-run defeat on the final day in Colombo.

Needing to bat out the day to maintain a 1-0 series lead, the hosts were undone by Ravichandran Ashwin's five for 42 and succumbed to 134 all out just after the lunch interval.

While Kohli was celebrating his first Test triumph as skipper, Kumar Sangakkara exited the international arena on a damp squib.

The 37-year-old was one of two Sri Lankan wickets to fall late on Sunday afternoon to bring down the curtain on a glittering career that saw him finish with 12,350 runs in 133 Tests.

However, his side could not engineer much resistance in the face of some disciplined bowling from the tourists, who will go into next week's third and final Test in Colombo with plenty of confidence.

Sri Lanka, who began the day on 72 for two needing a notional 341 further runs for victory, were dealt an instant blow when Angelo Mathews departed for 23 to the first ball of the morning.

Mathews had made 102 in his first innings but once he had poked at Umesh Yadav to be caught low down by stand-in wicketkeeper KL Rahul, Sri Lanka's hopes of a draw went with him.

Dinesh Chandimal contributed 15 but was bowled round his pads by leg-spinner Amit Mishra, while Jehan Mubarak edged his first ball to Kohli at second slip off Ishant Sharma.

Dhammika Prasad was also out for a duck, skying Ashwin to mid-on, and India's off-spinner ended Dimuth Karunaratne's defiance, the overnight batsman departing for a 103-ball 46 after being bowled by an arm ball.

Tharindu Kaushal was trapped in front for five by a googly from Mishra, who then removed last man Dushmantha Chameera with a similar delivery as Sri Lanka were all out in 43.4 overs.

Victory was India's first in Tests since beating England at Lord's last year. Since then they have suffered six defeats and drawn three matches.
