Keith Exton leaves role as Glamorgan head groundsman

Glamorgan's head groundsman Keith Exton has left the county just four days before the SSE Swalec hosts an international Twenty20 between England and Australia.

The Welsh side were fined £9,000, of which £5,000 was suspended, after their Royal London One-Day Cup match against Hampshire was abandoned for "unfit" conditions last month.

The umpires made the decision when Hampshire batsman Jimmy Adams was struck on the helmet from a seemingly innocuous length delivery by Michael Hogan.

Now, following an internal investigation, Exton has left his position.

A statement read: "Glamorgan County Cricket Club can confirm Keith Exton has left his role as head groundsman with immediate effect.

"The club would to thank Keith for his role in establishing the SSE SWALEC as a firm fixture in the international cricket calendar and particularly for his preparation of two Ashes Test pitches during his six-year tenure in Cardiff."

Chief executive Hugh Morris said: "On behalf of Glamorgan County Cricket Club I would like to thank Keith for the contribution he has made to the club and wish him well in his future endeavours."

On Monday, Cardiff will hold a high-profile double-header, with the men's and women's side of England and Australia doing battle at the ground.

Glamorgan were docked two points for a poor pitch last summer too - with the deduction coming off their tally in this year's Royal London cup.

But Exton also prepared the deck that England began their 2015 Ashes success on.

Although criticised in some quarters - not least by the Australian camp - for being slow and low, it provided a four-day finish in the hosts' favour and, ultimately, the closest finish of the series.
