Five-star Fisher steals the show

Matthew Fisher stole the headlines from some of his more illustrious colleagues on a busy opening night of the NatWest T20 Blast.

The 17-year-old showed a glimpse of the future as he burst through the Derbyshire Falcons line-up to claim sprint-format debut figures of 5-22 as Yorkshire Vikings recorded a seven-wicket win at Headingley.

Fisher, who has also made his LV= County Championship debut this season, starred in front of a crowd of 5,953 as the Blast kicked into overdrive for the first time this summer.

The Falcons made a good start through overseas star Hashim Amla, but Fisher struck with just his second ball to remove the dangerous Chesney Hughes.

Fisher combined with Richard Pyrah to bring the visitors' innings to a halt, as they collapsed from 66 for one to 81 for six in just four overs, the former becoming just the third Yorkshire player to take five wickets in a T20 innings.

Alex Hales demonstrated exactly why he has been summoned to the Indian Premier League with a brutal display of hitting as Notts Outlaws thrashed holders Birmingham Bears.

The Trent Bridge boundaries were not big enough for the England batsman as he hit an incredible eight sixes, including six from as many balls, en route to 86 not out as the Outlaws cantered to an eight-wicket success with more than five overs in hand.

Luke Fletcher, who Hales claims is the "best yorker bowler in the country", enhanced his growing reputation with 3-24 with all his victims, yes you guessed it, bowled by yorkers.

Fletcher restricted the Bears to 141 for seven despite the best efforts of captain Varun Chopra, who held the innings together with a well-made 80, but it was not enough with Hales and Riki Wessels (30) in top form.

Glamorgan and Surrey shared an incredible 455 runs in their opening game in the South Group at the Kia Oval, with the visitors coming out on top.

Jacques Rudolph and Colin Ingram gleefully accepted the invitation to bat and posted 62 and 91 respectively, with Ingram taking just 47 balls and smashing six maximums before he was bowled by Wahab Riaz.

Chris Cooke added more fireworks with a 19-ball 46 as the Welsh county racked up a massive 240 for three, their highest T20 score.

However, Surrey did not go down without a fight, with Steven Davies continuing his prolific start to the season with 58, while Kumar Sangakkara sparkled briefly for 37 before a collapse left too much to be done.

Zafar Ansari revived hopes with a blistering knock of 67 with a strike-rate of over 200, but lacked support as Dean Cosker claimed 4-30 to dismiss Surrey for 215.

Captain Steven Croft was the hero for Lancashire Lightning as they triumphed over Leicestershire Foxes in a dramatic rain-affected game at Emirates Old Trafford.

Croft, with an unbeaten 70, cut Ben Raine to the boundary from the final ball of the game as the last year's runners-up edged to victory by five wickets.

Ian Cockbain hit his best T20 score at the Bristol County Ground as Gloucestershire impressively chased down 176 with an over to spare.

The captain made an unbeaten 91 as the hosts coasted home by seven wickets, despite Nick Compton's earlier half-century for Middlesex setting a daunting total.

Hampshire, who so often excel in the competition, held off a late onslaught from Ryan ten Doeschate to take a 17-run victory from their clash with Essex Eagles.

Jimmy Adams' 55 helped Hampshire post 173 for four at the halfway stage, and they looked to be coasting towards victory until Ten Doeschate, who flew back from the IPL to feature, hit 68 before he was cleaned up by Yasir Arafat in the final over at the Ageas Bowl.

Calum MacLeod was the star for Durham Jets in their 41-run D/L method win over Northants Steelbacks, making 60 from just 32 balls, before fellow half-centurion Phil Mustard helped them reach 174 for eight.
