Continued cold and wet weather meant there was only one positive result in the third round of the Specsavers County Championship, with Essex thrashing Northamptonshire in Division Two.

In the top flight Surrey and Somerset came closest to a positive conclusion where Kumar Sangakkara's 71 took his match tally against Somerset at The Oval to 242.

Holding a first-innings lead of 110 overnight, Surrey posted 181 for eight declared to set Somerset a theoretical target of 292 in 42 overs.

The visitors were wobbling at 62 for four when Zafar Ansari claimed a third wicket, but James Hildreth and Peter Trego rallied to close on 122 for four.

A full day's play was also possible at Edgbaston where Warwickshire, who lead an embryonic Division One, gained a first-innings advantage of 64 before holders Yorkshire closed on 73 for two.

Resuming on 205 for two, Varun Chopra added just six to his overnight 101 but Jonathan Trott, Rikki Clarke and Tim Ambrose hit fifties, the latter's unbeaten, in a score of 443 for nine declared that secured maximum batting points.

Just 14 balls were possible on day four at Chester-le-Street where, in reply to Middlesex's 389 all out, Durham moved from 295 for four overnight to 305 for no further loss, securing a third batting point.

Essex went further clear at the top of Division Two thanks to victory at home to Northamptonshire by an innings and 92 runs.

With Northants 148 for four in their follow-on at the start of play, the hosts needed six more wickets and reached that target shortly after lunch, dismissing their opponents for 230. Ryan ten Doeschate grabbed four of them as only Rory Kleinveldt, with 35 not out, offered meaningful resistance.

Moeen Ali smashed a 106-ball ton for Worcestershire versus Gloucestershire at Bristol.

The England all-rounder's 136 not out, including 17 fours and four sixes, dominated Worcestershire's 210 for four, although they were never likely to reach a target of 352.

Chris Dent and number eight Jack Taylor earlier hit hundreds for Gloucestershire - 138 not out and 105 from 103 balls respectively - in a total of 382 for seven declared.

Leicestershire secured maximum batting points against Kent at Grace Road thanks to centuries from Neil Dexter and Mark Cosgrove.

The third-wicket pair, who joined forces at 15 for two, extended their overnight partnership of 159 to 217 as Dexter amassed 131 and Cosgrove 122.

Although Wayne White's unbeaten 42 was the only other significant score, the hosts were able to declare on 401 for nine before Kent reached 85 for two.

The weather forced an early draw between Derbyshire and Glamorgan at the County Ground.

The hosts fell short of a fourth batting point, adding 14 to their overnight 331 for nine before being dismissed as Tom Poynton and Andy Carter's last-wicket stand realised 56.

Leading by 32 on first innings, Glamorgan progressed to 87 for two before play was curtailed.
