England women appear second in the inaugural International Cricket Council rankings system, with one-day and Twenty20 world champions Australia top of the pile.

The 10-team table treats all three formats of the game equally to incorporate one rankings system, which will be updated after every series.

Australia regained the Ashes over the summer in a multi-format series, winning the one-off Test, the one-day international series 2-1, with England triumphant in two of the three T20 matches, handing Meg Lanning's tourists an overall 10-6 advantage.

England, on 124 points, are 10 points behind Australia in the rankings, with New Zealand (109) third, India (105) fourth and West Indies (99) rounding out the top five.

The England and Wales Cricket Board welcomed the rankings system, with former England captain and director of England women's cricket Clare Connor, saying: "These are exciting times for our sport as women's cricket continues to gain a greater profile and attract more participants worldwide than ever before.

"Today's announcement is another significant step forward for the global women's game and will bring an even greater competitive edge to all three formats at international level."

The ICC women's world rankings (points in brackets): 1 Australia (134), 2 England (124), 3 New Zealand (109), 4 India (105), 5 West Indies (99), 6 South Africa (92), 7 Pakistan (81), 8 Sri Lanka (74), 9 Bangladesh (57), 10 Ireland (26).
