England wait on Alex Hales' fitness for Afghanistan clash

Batsman Alex Hales is hoping to be fit for action as England prepare to take on Afghanistan in the World Twenty20.

Hales sat out training in Delhi on the eve of the match after experiencing back pain and was restricted to light stretching excercises with the team physio.

England will assess the opener on Wednesay morning but Hampshire's James Vince is standing by to partner Jason Roy at the head of the innings.

Hales has yet to catch fire in the tournament, scoring 17 and 28, but is England's only T20 centurion and has also scored seven fifties in the format.

Late fitness scares aside, England are confident they have done everything possible to prepare for the unpredictable Afghans.

The two sides have met just twice before at international level, but the associate nation's performances against Sri Lanka and South Africa have hinted that a big scalp is within their scope.

"Our priority is on winning, this is a big game and we are certainly not taking Afghanistan for granted," said England captain Eoin Morgan.

"They're a dangerous side and play a really exciting brand of cricket.

"Ten years ago we might not have known much about them, but now that is the nature of modern sport. We know a lot about them now and that is quite comforting, the fact that there's no stone that's left unturned.

"We watched the early stages of the tournament and they played some really good cricket and we watched the games against Sri Lanka and South Africa in different circumstances.

"Winning one of these games will be their ultimate objective.

"If you keep missing, it's fine, but the opportunity along the way will come. If you have your day, you might win a game."

Depending on results elsewhere, qualification from Group One could be settled by net run-rate.

England would be forgiven, then, if they were tempted to consider the manner of victory as well as the result itself, but Morgan rejected the notion outright.

"First and foremost we need to go into that game with the right mindset.," he said.

"Focusing on anything else at the moment, given that there are two group games left, would be a little bit naïve - actually stupid."

Uncapped left-arm armer Liam Dawson is hoping to get the nod for a debut in the match, but England will only decide whether to include a third spinner once they see the pitch.
