JP Duminy's unbeaten 68 inspired South Africa to a thrilling seven-wicket win over India in the first of three Twenty20 internationals in Dharamsala.
India had been marginal favourites to win after Rohit Sharma struck 106 off 66 balls - his first century in international T20 - in a 138-run stand with Virat Kohli (43), but the hosts stumbled towards the end of their innings to finish on 199 for five.
South Africa, almost predictably, saw AB de Villiers smash 51 at the top but it was Duminy who produced the fireworks late on with his seven sixes and a four, rescuing the visitors' middle order en route to victory with just two deliveries left.
South Africa, playing their first-ever T20 in India, opted to bowl first and it proved a very good battle between bat and ball in the early stages. Shikhar Dhawan was run out cheaply, while the big shots came from Sharma, who also survived a caught-and-bowled chance off Marchant de Lange.
Sharma easily reached his fifty in 39 balls, before Kohli smashed back-to-back sixes off spinner Imran Tahir to cross 1,000 runs in the format.
With dew setting in, the momentum was with India as Tahir went for 35 runs in three overs, and Sharma got to his century with a six off De Lange.
India were 159 for one before Kyle Abbott pegged them back in the 16th over, Kohli and Sharma caught attempting pull shots.
Chris Morris then removed Suresh Raina lbw for 14, before Ambati Rayudu was run out next ball. Three tight final overs meant South Africa went into the changeover on a high, which continued into the run chase when De Villiers and Hashim Amla racked up 67 in the powerplay.
Two quick wickets put India back in as slight hesitation saw Amla (36) run out, and while De Villiers was all style with his seven fours and a six, he was bowled charging down by Ravichandran Ashwin shortly after getting to fifty.
When debutant Sreenath Aravind bowled Faf du Plessis South Africa were 95 for three, but Duminy and Farhaan Behardien (32) dragged the equation back to 66 needed off 30.
The partnership was proving very effective, Duminy taking Axar Patel for three successive sixes to help set up the final two overs nicely.
With 24 required, Duminy promptly reached his half-century with a four and rounded things up with a six and a single in the final over off Arvind.
