An Australian cricket fan has been sentenced to a week in a Sri Lankan prison after streaking on day one of the first Test in Kandy.

A crowd member, named by Cricket Australia as Alex James, ran naked on to the field during a rain break in the evening session between Australia and Sri Lanka on Tuesday.

He was not apprehended at the time but was arrested as he left the Pallekelle Stadium later in the day before being bailed.

CA said on Wednesday: "File this one under 'It seemed like a good idea at the time'.

"Australian cricket fan Alex James has been fined 3,000 rupees (£15.70) and sentenced to a week in prison after completing a nude run during the washed-out final session on day one."

Sri Lanka Cricket responded to the incident by increasing security at the ground on day two.
