India have named former captain Anil Kumble as their new head coach on a one-year deal.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been looking for a full-time coach since Duncan Fletcher's departure following last year's World Cup, with Sanjay Bangar having taken charge for the recent limited-overs tour of Zimbabwe.

Kumble played 132 Tests and 271 one-day internationals for India, taking 956 wickets in the two formats.

In Tests he finished with 619 scalps, leaving the leg-spinner third on the all-time list of wicket-takers behind Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne of Australia.

The BCCI, who had 57 applicants for the post, announced on its official website: "Former India captain Anil Kumble has been appointed coach of the national side for one year."
