The legendary voice of football tells his story in this stunning paperback package published to coincide with the 2010 World Cup. From Ronnie Radford to Wayne Rooney, John Motson’s knowledge and passion for football are unrivalled. In Motty, he shares his story for the first time and guides us through a career which has spanned forty years and over 2,000 matches.

From reporting on the exploits of the giant-killing Hereford team in the 1972 FA Cup that made his name on Match of the Day, to the estimated twenty-million viewers who tuned in to his commentary on England’s match with Portugal at the 2006 World Cup, Motson’s time in the commentary box has delivered some unforgettable anecdotes. In compelling behind-the-scenes stories, we hear about the greatest matches he has watched and the iconic players and managers he has been privileged to know, from Bill Shankly to Alex Ferguson and Brian Clough, Alf Ramsey and Matt Busby.  He also reflects on darker times, such as hooliganism and Hillsborough, where Motson found himself commentating on a tragedy rather than a football match.

With his unique perspective gained from decades in football, Motty provides a fascinating, opinionated insight into the key issues in the game including the nurturing of our young talent and why the England team has failed to perform at the highest levels; the best England managers Motson has seen at work – and those brilliant men he thinks should have been given the position; his take on the huge changes that that transformed football this season and his hopes for England in South Africa.

Honest, humorous and insightful Motty is essential reading for anyone who has grown up with the undisputed voice of football.

There is no doubting Motty is a footie hero’
