A signed Martina Navratilova tennis racket
Sport.co.uk have teamed with the Laureus World Sports Academy to give you the chance to win a signed tennis racket from legend Martina Navratilova.
Martina Navratilova is a member of the Laureus World Sports Academy, a unique association of 46 of the greatest living sporting legends, who volunteer their time to act as global ambassadors for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation by using their influence to highlight the plight of disadvantaged children and supporting humanitarian projects around the world.
Tennis legend and Laureus World Sports Academy Member Martina Navratilova found herself taking part in an impromptu session in a boxing ring when she visited the Fight for Peace community sports project in the East End of London.
Martina, who revealed a week ago that she had breast cancer, was in great form as she joked and sparred playfully with the young people from the North Woolwich area who attend the project which is supported by the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.
Martina, who will have radiation treatment next month, said: “I don’t want to slow down. I travel all the time and that’s how I like it. You don’t want to dwell on it, but you don’t want to ignore it either. When I knew I was going to be in London, I was determined to visit the Fight for Peace project, and I was delighted I could be here to meet the kids and volunteers and encourage them not to let anything stop them either.” In December Martina is to lead a Laureus team up Mt.Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, to raise funds and awareness for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.
In the party will be Laureus Friends & Ambassadors Deshun Deysul, South Africa’s greatest female mountaineer, German Paralympic cyclist Michael Teuber, and a group of around 20 other climbers. Fight for Peace is an innovative project which focuses on young people growing up in communities plagued by crime, gangs and knife and gun violence in multi-cultural inner-city areas within the East End of London. Through its focus on boxing and martial arts, the project aims to engage at-risk young people within the community and offer real alternatives to crime.
The project is open to all boys and girls between the ages of 12–21, with the target of integrating young people of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. In a community where toughness and macho behaviour is important for young people, sports like boxing and martial arts have a natural appeal. These sports channel aggression, transforming it into positive energy through building teamwork, self-confidence, healthy competition and respect for rules. At Fight for Peace the goal is to make the youngsters realise that it is not necessary to fight in the street or pick up a knife or a gun to gain status and respect.
Martina added: “This is what Laureus is all about, supporting projects which use sport to gain the interest of young people from difficult backgrounds and to keep them off the streets and out of trouble. Being able to spend time with kids at Laureus projects is always a memorable experience. It was great to see a session of the Youth Council involving kids from the project in running and managing the Fight for Peace programme. I would like to congratulate everyone who has worked so hard to make Fight for Peace such a success, both in London and in Brazil.”
