There used to be a time when a home fixture against Manchester City was a run-of-the-mill affair, however the sight of Roberto Mancini’s high-fliers wandering into any away dressing room now signals one of the Premier League’s plum draws.
Since the arrival of Sheikh Mansour in September 2008 – a whopping £1bn has been shelled out on the Eastlands outfit – who now appear to be showing the potential his wealth surely warrants.
The fixture marks Fulham’s 14th competitive game of the season having started their Europa League adventure back on June 30 – a time when the rest of the Premiership were still on their sun loungers.
While the Cottager’s European form has been solid to date, the same can’t be said in the league, with Martin Jol’s charges stuttering to just one point from their opening three games - and will no doubt be turning to new striker Bryan Ruiz – a £10.6m window signing from FC Twente, to turn their fortunes around.
By contrast, Roberto Mancini’s Billionaire playboys come to Craven Cottage with a maximum return from their opening three fixtures, averaging four goals per game, and look virtually certain to be in the mix for the Championship title come May – a feat they last achieved back in 1967/68. Edin Dzeko has netted six goals alone, while the club offers a strength-in-depth that City themselves would once have envied.
History is on Mancini’s side in the head-to-head, as they have only come away empty handed from this fixture once since the Premiership began, back in 2005/06 – courtesy of two Steed Malbranque strikes.
