Luke Campbell to fight Derry Mathews on Tony Bellew undercard in October

Luke Campbell is to fight Derry Mathews at Liverpool's Echo Arena on October 15.

Mathews, 32, last fought WBO lightweight champion Terry Flanagan, in March. Olympic gold medallist Campbell will fight for the third time since his first professional defeat, to Yvan Mendy.

Their match-up, on the undercard of Tony Bellew's WBC cruiserweight title defence against BJ Flores, represents the most dangerous of Campbell's career to date.

"Derry has some great wins on his record," said Campbell, 28. "I'm expecting it to be my toughest fight yet."

Like Campbell, the proven Mathews stopped fellow Briton Tommy Coyle in 10 rounds, and he said: "I think this has come too early for him.

"When I win it's going to open doors for bigger and better things. There's life in this old dog, believe me."
