I've paid out of my own pocket to bring Diaz here says Khan

Amir Khan has explained to any fans who may have lost faith in him that he is actually laid out a sizeable chunk of his hard-earned cash so as to regain their trust.

Britain’s former two-time world light-welterweight has paid ‘well over the odds’ to bring across the Atlantic another ex-title holder for his homecoming fight in Sheffield on Saturday.

Khan said: 'I know the importance of performing in your own country and that some people would have preferred me not to go to the US so early.

'First of all I had the chance to fulfil my boyhood dream of fighting in America. Even more vitally, I just couldn’t get the top fighters from over there to risk coming here to face me.'

It was in the knowledge that this weekend might be his last chance to reward his home fans that Khan went over the top to bring Julio Diaz to Sheffield.

Khan added: 'We’ve paid Julio a lot, lot more than he would have got in America just so I can put on a spectacular performance for my home fans.'

Assuming he wins, Khan knows he will have to go back to the US for any bid to regain his world titles.
