Anthony Crolla targets career-best performance against Jorge Linares

Anthony Crolla admits he will need a career-best performance to beat Jorge Linares at the Manchester Arena and claim the WBC Diamond and vacant Ring lightweight titles.

The 29-year-old Crolla is putting his WBA lightweight belt on the line for the second time after stopping Ismael Barroso in his last fight in May.

Linares, 31, climbed off the canvas to stop Kevin Mitchell in London earlier this year and has since taken his record to 40-3.

The bout between Crolla and the Venezuelan on September 24 is being promoted as a unification contest, one the Manchester-born fighter is desperate to win.

"I'm fighting a great fighter for one of the greatest prizes in the sport," Crolla told Sky Sports News HQ.

"I'm very blessed and thankful to have this opportunity. But it doesn't stop there, I want to go out there now and make sure I win it. It'll look real good on the mantelpiece.

"It's the two best lightweights in the division and I think the Ring has recognised that by putting the prestigious belt on the line. Not many British fighters get to fight for it, so it is an honour. But it'd be so much better to win it.

"He's a great fighter but I've seen a few weaknesses that I can take advantage of on the night and make sure I win those beautiful belts.

"He's a very durable and tough fighter. He came from behind against Kev, who was a matter of seconds away from winning the fight. That's what champions do.

"I know I'll need a career-best performance on September 24. It's one I think I can deliver.

"I see this as the biggest fight out there and I'm thankful to have the opportunity."

Crolla claimed the WBA lightweight title at the Manchester Arena last November and retained it against Barroso at the same venue.

"That arena, I say time and time again, is a special place to me, somewhere I went as a young lad watching some of the greats of British boxing," said Crolla.

"There's nowhere else I would have rather won the title and it's the perfect setting to win those belts and make a bit of history."
